RunLog 11/13/11 – A Shitty Smell in the Air

English: Manure rotting facility The ultimate ...

Another gorgeous November day in Central Maine, it was 57 degrees and sunny. The only problem was that the farmer up the road had 3 large loads of chicken manure delivered to his field to be spread and it has had a few days to ripen and boy has it.

The field is to the south of us and guess what direction the wind was from at about 10 mph – yep the south.  It was not an invigorating run, where you get to smell the fresh country air. I don’t mind cow manure, but chicken shit stinks!

But that is part of living in the country and we have put up with it every year for the past 10 years, so it isn’t something new, just something you deal with. Besides that same farmer is going to deliver 3-4 bucket loads of cow poop, to help with fertilizing our gardens, so I can’t complain too much.

For the run itself, I was tired. We had just walked Bennie 3.5 miles down to the Campbell Farm and I have run more this week than I have in a long time. I had thought about trying 4.0, so that I would go over 20 miles for the week, but I was too tired and don’t want to increase my mileage too much too soon.

The stench from the chicken shit didn’t bother too much, I still ran the 2.0 in under 18:00 minutes which is my goal to get and stay under a 9:00 pace most of the time. By next spring, I would like to see most of my training runs be around an 8:00 minute pace, I know that I can run that fast, have done it before. We will see how my knee holds up, but so far so good. After the first lap I took off the running jacket and just ran in shorts and a t-shirt felt good.

Wow!!!! I ran 18.2 miles this week, that is the most mileage I have run in a week for at least 3 years.  Yet I am sitting here and my knee is not bothering me at all, which is a good sign. Yes I am tired, but it is a good tired.

Quality of the run:  Good run, but nothing special.
