Going to Bethlehem for the #RWHalf

The past 24 hours have been what you could call crazy busy.

I packed for the #RWHalf trip and trying to get all the last-minute stuff that needs to get done before going on a 5 day trip.

Did I get it all done – hell no!

However, I got more done than I thought I would. I even got a 5.0 mile run in yesterday, I went slowly and just used it as a recovery run, instead of pushing it. I felt good, but I had sat down a lot working and my legs were sore and tired. So I needed the run just to loosen things up.

The hardest part of most trips is the travel to your destination. This morning I got up at 3:30 and was on the road at 4:00 A.M. I drove from Sidney, Maine to Bethlehem, PA in about 9 hours. The only place that I had to slow down was going into Hartford, otherwise it was a good drive and only a couple of breaks to get gas and breakfast. For some reason my hamstrings at the end of the drive were toast! They were definitely sore by the time I got to Bethlehem.

When I got here, of course I had forgotten a few things, like the water bottle for my Nathan hydration belt and some Gu. So I decided to go find Aardvark Sports and looked around, if I had about $500 that I could just spend I would have come out of there very happy, but as it was, I went ahead and got a pair of Zensa Calf sleeve to replace the ones that TheWife has confiscated, a pair of Injinji toe socks and a few packets of Gu.

Then I went to Dick’s Sporting Goods to get a replacement water bottle. Like they say race like you train, well I don’t care for the idea of using the water stops during the half marathon and want to hydrate when I want to, so I wanted a water bottle that fit into the hydration belt. I also bought my first Honey Stinger Waffle and I definitely will be buying them again. Tasted delicious and didn’t bother my stomach at all when I ran right after eating it.

Of course now that I had bought all this new gear, I had to go try it out.

Then when I got back to the hotel, I wandered over to the workout room and saw that they had some good treadmills and I haven’t run on a treadmill in almost 2 years, so I couldn’t resist. I started out with a 1/4 at 7.5 MPH, increased to 1/4 at 8.0 then did 1/4 at 9.0 and my last quarter was at 10 MPH. I found out that my iPhone App wasn’t that Β accurate on the treadmill, it only listed me at .76 of a mile.

How did the Zensah calf sleeves and Ininji socks feel – great!!!! The 3.1 run was just comfortable, even crossing the ramps for 33 were a little dicey at times. Just not used to running a lot of traffic anymore, but will get back to it. I will be going back to Dick’s and getting some more, they are delicious and didn’t bother me at all πŸ™‚

Then had a good supper at Ruby Tuesday’s Asian Salmon, broccoli and Fries, with an Octoberfest from Samuel Adams :-).

It has been a looooonnnnnng day! Now time to get a good night’s sleep and be ready to go tomorrow. It will be busy and I will be meeting a lot of people who I have wanted to meet. πŸ™‚ A very good thing.

  1. A runner forgetting gear before a trip for a race? Unheard of…however, a runner “forgetting” gear so they can buy new gear? More likely πŸ™‚ Nice 5! Sounds like a run after being cooped up for 9 hours in a car was a good plan to move those hammies. See you tomorrow! It’ll be nice to meet you face to face!

    • It sure will be nice to see you F2F :-). The runs were needed very much after the drive down just waiting now and doing some catch-up work on my MacBookPro, now that I got it fixed. Feels nice to have it back πŸ™‚
